Kate Maxted King
Associate Director of Operations, AGMA (American Guild of Musical Artists)
B.A. Arts Management, University of Massachusetts - Amherst
Ballet Idaho
Kate is originally from Durango, Colorado, but moved to the Boston area to attend Walnut Hill School for the Performing Arts for high school. After graduating, she joined the Joffrey Ballet trainee program in Chicago before starting her professional career. Over the next decade Kate danced with Colorado Ballet, Ballet San Antonio, and Ballet Idaho, performing leading roles in ballets ranging from The Sleeping Beauty to George Balanchine’s Rubies.
While dancing professionally, Kate earned her BA in Arts Management from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She also interned at the San Antonio Symphony and the McNay Art Museum. Kate retired from performing professionally in 2021 after being offered a Business Representative position at AGMA. In that role, Kate worked with artists and AGMA negotiators to advocate and bargain for better work place conditions for Artists in the dance and opera industry across the US. Outside of the arts world, she has also worked as a legal assistant, research associate, and project manager.
In 2024, Kate was promoted to Associate Director of Operations, and in this new capacity, she is working to establish and improve internal processes, assist in managing the member database, and execute data research and analysis to support the negotiating teams, Finance Department, and Membership Department.
Kate currently lives in in Denver with her husband, son, and two dogs. She enjoys exploring their neighborhood restaurants and parks, hiking in the nearby mountains, and collecting houseplants.
The transition from THE stage to the “next stage” can feel really daunting. As someone who made the leap (even though she truthfully was not sure she was ready to stop dancing), Kate is thrilled to be a potential resource for Artists facing this change.
