Christopher Stowell

"Christopher Stowell is the Artistic Director of Canada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet, where he is leading the Company into a new era rooted in bold theatricality, meaningful community connection, and a belief that ballet should be accessible, inspiring, and relevant to all.

An internationally respected dancer, choreographer, teacher, and artistic leader, Stowell brings more than four decades of experience to the role. The 2026/27 season marks the first fully programmed season under his leadership, reflecting a vision for the Royal Winnipeg Ballet that honours the rich traditions of classical ballet while embracing innovation, collaboration, and the creation of new work. At the heart of his approach is a simple belief: ballet has the power to bring people together and create lasting human connection.

Born in New York City and raised in a family devoted to the art form, Stowell grew up immersed in ballet. The son of former New York City Ballet dancers and Pacific Northwest Ballet leaders Kent Stowell and Francia Russell, he developed an early appreciation for the performing arts. He trained at Pacific Northwest Ballet School and the School of American Ballet before joining San Francisco Ballet in 1985. Over a distinguished 16-year performing career, he rose to the rank of Principal Dancer, earning acclaim for his interpretations of both classical and contemporary repertoire, particularly the works of George Balanchine.

Following his performing career, Stowell established himself as one of North America's most respected artistic leaders. He served as Artistic Director of Oregon Ballet Theatre and Associate Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, while also building an international reputation as a choreographer, répétiteur, coach, and mentor. His works have been performed by leading companies across North America, and he continues to stage productions, teach, adjudicate international competitions, and serve as a representative of the Balanchine Trust.

Since arriving in Winnipeg, Stowell has focused on expanding opportunities for audiences to engage with ballet in new ways. Under his leadership, initiatives such as RWB Revealed brings rehearsals into public spaces, inviting the community into the creative process, while the Studio Series offers intimate performances that deepen audiences' connection to the artists and art form. He also launched the Northern Lights Project, a national partnership with the National Arts Centre, Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, and Fall for Dance North Festival that supports the creation of new Canadian dance works and encourages collaboration across artistic disciplines.

Throughout his career, Stowell has been recognized for his generosity as a mentor and his commitment to nurturing the next generation of dancers, choreographers, and artistic leaders. He believes the strongest arts organizations are those that invest in people, foster creativity, and serve as vibrant cultural resources for their communities.
